Das Buch bietet einen netten Einstieg in die Thematik. Vieles ist allerdings wissenschaftlich unsauber gearbeitet und hat einen extrem starken Fokus auf qualitiven Beispielen. Ein Blick über den Horizont auf quantitative Studien wäre angemessen gewesen.
Das Buch 'Women and Gaming' beschreibt die Motivation von mehreren Frauen mit dem Videospiel 'Die Sims' zu spielen zu beginnen. Es zeigt durch die Biografien dieser Frauen ' die alle unterschiedlichen Alters sind ' die Bedingungen und Umstände, die ursprünglich dazu geführt haben mit dem Spiel zu beginnen und wie sich dieses Spielen entwickelt hat. Neben diesen Biografien erkennt man auch wie wichtig lebenslanges Lernen in diesem Kontext ist und welche Rolle es in unserer Gesellschaft spielt.Als ich das Buch zu lesen begann hatte ich keine konkreten Erwartungen und war einfach gespannt auf den Inhalt, da ich die Sims selbst gerne spielte. Schon das erste Beispiel im Buch hat mich sehr überrascht, da es hierbei um eine Frau ging, die ihre Regeln definierte um das Spiel zu spielen. Die Sims sind ein Spiel wo man die schönen Seiten im Leben präsentiert bekommt: Man fängt zu spielen an, geht regelmäßig arbeiten, durch das Lesen von Büchern kann man seine Skills verbessern um beruflich aufzusteigen, man heiratet, gründet eine Familie und lebt recht gut. Selten passieren negative Dinge ' man kann es sogar schaffen, wenn man die Aufgaben erfüllt, dass man den Alterungsprozess bei den Sims verlangsamen oder aufhalten kann. Dinge, die im realen Leben nicht möglich sind. Diese Frau aus dem ersten Beispiel hat wie bereits angesprochen ihre eigenen Regeln definiert um dieses Spiel zu spielen ' um auch die nicht so schönen Dinge im Leben zu sehen, wo es nicht so einfach ist sich neue Möbel zu kaufen oder man so schnell beruflich voran kommt. Dieses Beispiel hat mich sehr fasziniert, da ich dadurch das Spiel aus einem anderen Blickwinkel wahrgenommen habe.Neben detaillierten Geschichten und Biografien von Sims-Spielerinnen finden sich zwischendurch immer wieder theoretische Ansätze, die diese Entwicklungen versuchen zu erklären und begründen. So wird beispielsweise veranschaulicht wieso das Schulsystem in dieser Art und Weise nicht mehr funktionieren kann und wie die Bedingungen für die Lernenden besser wären.Das Buch ist sehr kurzweilig geschrieben und vor allem sehr interessant, wenn man die Sims selbst gespielt hat, da man dann viele Beispiel wieder erkennt und sich in manchen Situation sogar wiedererkennt. Ich persönlich fand vor allem die Mischung aus Praxis und Theorie sehr gelungen und angenehm zu lesen.
